Should Wizard Hit Mommy
SHOULD WIZARD HIT MOMMY
MORAL ISSUE
John Updike’s story Should Wizard Hit Mommy’ raises a very pertinent and a profound issue. Should parents have the prerogative to always decide what is best for their children? And are children supposed to listen to and obey their parents unquestioningly?
Roger Skunk, though an obedient child, is a sad and a depressed one. His awful smell keeps others away and he has no friends. When the Wizard fulfils his wish and Roger Skunk gets the rose smell, he is thrilled. All the other creatures love the smell and play with Roger Skunk.
However Roger Skunk’s mother is not happy. She wants her son to get back his original smell. Roger Skunk accepts his mother’s dictate and slowly the other creatures get used to his smell.
Jack, who brings this twist in the story, does so to expose Jo to the harsh realities of life. But Jo insists that Wizard should hit mommy, for making the Wizard give Roger Skunk back his bad smell. Jack is adamant in his refusal to change the ending of the story. He maintains that mothers are always right and that they know best.
John Updike thus raises a very relevant question. Are parents always justified in enforcing their views upon their children in an attempt to teach their children what is right and what is wrong. Parents have experience and knowledge on their side whereas children view everything with their heart and want all to be happy and joyous. Parents need to guide their kids but they should also have the patience to respect and consider their children’s viewpoint.

MIDDLE POSITION
JOHN UPDIKE in his story Should Wizard Hit Mommy’ portrays Jack as a new age father and a husband. In departure from the past, Jack does try to contribute his bit in helping his wife and look after the kids.
It is Jack’s duty to put their four year old daughter to sleep in the evenings by telling her a story. Jack has been doing so for all these years. But now as Jo is growing older this chore has become an ordeal

Using the skunk character as a descriptive element in his poem, Robert Lowell increases the space between the character and the suggestion of the society portrayed in the poem. Normally, everybody avoids skunks because of their reputation for spraying uninvited visitors with a noxious vapor. I think the reason for Robert Lowell's choice in animals is very understandable. Using…

A common conception of the legendary skunk is their rather fascinating ability to deter predators with a horrible smelling spray that blasts anything within ten feet with a repulsive mist. The skunk is a force to be reckoned with and not just for the fact that it can leave you smelling foul for days. Skunks spray when alarmed as a defensive technique, in which many predators have encountered these creatures and only the smell tells their story. Robert Connors, a scholar at the University of New Hampshire, enlightens readers on his encounter with a trapped skunk and his personal struggles in the situation. This bottle the skunk was in might have been thought to be harmless waste, but our trash is hurting animals and our environment. In Connors analytic approach to his narrative account in “How in the World Do You Get a Skunk Out of a Bottle?” he takes a significant stride in accounting an almost impossible situation while humanizing a skunk.…

In Perfume: a story of Murder written by Patrick Suskind, the main character Grenouille is an extremely mental and obscure man. His extraordinary sense of smell leads him to be a bizarre and peculiar person. The subconscious thoughts and dreams Grenouille conjures immensely help the plot develop; it adds another side of the novel. Thriving and devouring off the scent of women and objects lead the way of the creation of his dreams. Conjuring himself as the master of a lavish purple castle and an array of imaginary servants who served him his book of scents, “They are carrying the book of odors on an invisible tray, and in their white-gloved, invisible hands they are carrying those precious bottles, they set them down, ever so carefully, they bow, and they disappear. (129)” Grenouille used these dreams as a way to evoke the past scents he smelled. Every smell he “drinks” reminds him of a life altering scent, “… A scent from the year 1752, sniffed up in spring, before sunrise of the Pont-Royal, his nose directed to the west, from where a light breeze bore the blended odors of sea and forest and a touch of the tarry smell of the barges tied up at the bank. (129)” These smells launch Grenouille out of the dark cave he is in and to a whole new place where it reminds him of the freedom he once had, instead of the new prison he has chosen to be sentenced to. These scents Grenouille protects are his favorites. Grenouille completely throws himself into the consumption of these scents so much he is on an almost high, “He was now scent-logged. His arms and legs grew heavier and heavier as they pressed into the cushions. His mind was wonderfully fogged. But it was not yet the end of his debauch. (130)”. The scents he delves into encourage him to go out and capture more.…

A parent is the one who normally knows their child better than anyone else. This being the case a parent should be able to evaluate the type of child they have and how they will respond to certain actions. I personally have two children who are very different in behavior. While my five year old girl is outgoing in nature she is also cautious in her actions. She is a people pleaser and hates to disappoint. My two year old son on the other hand is one hundred percent boy and has to take the trial by fire approach. Spanking is an option on the table for both children. My daughter happens to be a child who responds better to timeouts as a form of punishment, whereas my son is oblivious to sitting out from any given activity. This is not to say that my daughter never receives a spanking nor does my son always receive a spanking but it does demonstrate my argument of parents being able to decide what is best for their children…

    Advice to Parents Essay

As a person grows up and matures, they need to learn how to handle things on their own. A mother and father can not always be there to hold a child’s hand and walk them through every step of the way. There is a point when a parent needs to just let go and let that child take on the world on their own. As a growing, maturing person, people need to learn to do things on their own, and that can never happen if they still have a mom or dad trying to hold their hand through every life experience. If a parent does that, then their child grows up not knowing anything about the world he/she lives in. They do not know how to do anything on their own. Also, whenever a parent picks up their kid from school, they always ask, “How was your day”, do not do that.…

There are subplots in every family drama, hurdles that must be overcome before our goals are met. Some of those hurdles we set up for ourselves. Often our good intentions, hopes and desires sabotage our parenting program. Sometimes we'd rather be the good parent than engage in good parenting. And sometimes our kids are right. We just don't understand what they're going through.…

First of all,not all parents are good teachers. As normal individuals, some parents more or less have some bad habits.Although parents almost instinctively devote themselves to cultivating their offspring, the result might turn out to be disappointment. For all their children, tend to unconsciously or consciously copy everything including bad ones from their parents.Another deficiency of parents as teachers is the fact that most parents are lack of common senses of education. All too often we observe some parents tend to pursue their cherished but failed dream by forcing their children to develop in a prearranged direction.Ironically, when their children do not follow the instructions, the children will be regarded as disobedient or allegedly rebellious. In fact,It is parents rather than their children that virtually disobey common senses.…

One summer day shortly thereafter, Rat and Mole find themselves near the grand Toad Hall and pay a visit to Toad. Toad is rich (having inherited wealth from his father): jovial, friendly and kind-hearted but aimless and conceited, he regularly becomes obsessed with current fads, only to abandon them as quickly as he took them up. Having only recently given up boating, Toad's current craze is his horse-drawn caravan. In fact, he is about to go on a trip, and persuades the reluctant Rat and willing Mole to join him. The following day (after Toad has already tired of the realities of camp life and sleeps-in to avoid chores), a passing motor car scares the horse, causing the caravan to overturn into a ditch. Rat does a war dance and threatens to have the law on the motor car drivers, but this marks the immediate end of Toad's craze for caravan travel, to be replaced with an obsession for motor cars. When the three animals get to the nearest town, they have Toad go to the police station to make a complaint against the vandals and their motor car and thence to a blacksmith to retrieve and mend the caravan. Toad - in thrall to the experience of his encounter - refuses. Rat and Mole find an inn from where they organise the necessary steps and, exhausted, return home by train. Meanwhile, Toad makes no effort to help, instead deciding to order himself a motor car.…

Finally, I believe that parents ought not to consider their children as an expansion of themselves. They should not be egocentric and they should find the courage to accept their children’s choices and reactions not as a battle but as if their children are showing them the way to how to be a better parent, teaching them the important values of equality and mutual respect.…
