RETURNING TO SCHOOL Page 2
Becoming a mother at a young age was very stressful at times. I wanted to continue my education but it was hard being a single mother. So returning to school was a must for me, but the question was when? Returning to school was a struggle, but eventually I got on the right mind frame and became focused after getting my daughter more than half way through school herself. Now I am attending school. I just want to share with you briefly the journey it took for me to return. Between the years of 1997 when my daughter was born and 2002, we struggled to make ends meet so I had to work two jobs just to take care of my daughter. My mother watched her as much as she could and when she couldn’t I tried to pay a baby sitter. So in order to pay the bills and have a place to live there was no time for an education for mommy. And at the time I really don’t think I cared. However in 2001 I and my mother discussed me returning to school when my daughter started kindergarten in the fall of 2002. I told her I would consider it if she would babysit. We never discussed it again. November 2002 my mother got into a serious life battling car accident that put her into a coma for a month in a half. It turned my world upside down. My whole life went numb, and I felt as if I was watching a lifetime movie and I was in it. She was never the same, short-term memory loss, incompetent, and never walked again. My mother struggled for 5 years and finally passed in 2007. Those 5 years were the worst years of my life to see her struggle. But at the same time I was relieved that she didn’t have to anymore. RETURNING TO SCHOOL Page 3 Early 2008, I and my sisters discussed me returning to school and I told them if I was to return it would have to be at home online because it’s more convenient for me. So I set myself a goal and told myself that when my daughter starts high school I will start my research on finding a good accredited college to attend online and possibly go for my associates. But as my daughter struggled in school and wasn’t doing well in certain areas I felt once again that I would have to put my goals/dreams on hold and focus on her. Because unlike me, I wanted her to learn from my mistakes and further her education at the right time and not prolong anything like I did. By my daughter’s sophomore year in high school, she started to inspire me more to return to school. She was getting interested in going to college herself and would ask me if and when I would ever attend college as well. She motivated me to put my goals back on the table again and take another step forward. Then in 2012, Ironically Ashford University called my sister who already attends college elsewhere and asked her question about attending their college. She replied, “no, but I can refer you to someone who might be interested.” That phone call changed my life and is still changing it now. My mother and daughter really have inspired me to further my education. And I think my mother passing was a big eye opener for me to step out of my shell and explore my opportunities. As for my daughter, she more or less confirmed it and gave me the okay in “Returning to school”. It took me 15 years to do it, now I just have to keep it going.

Perplex, that is the feeling that I have when I first came to University Malaysia of Kelantan (UMK). Actually I never thought that I will be coming here to further my higher studies but I was offered the Entrepreneurship (Commerce) course for my second intake at UMK so I packed my bags and started my journey to Kelantan. I also felt very anxious and nervous when I first came to Kelantan and live here as it was far away from my hometown which is situated in Bentong, Pahang. Furthermore, i haven’t travel to other states before plus i have to start a new life in a place that is unfamiliar to me. But I have put all my courage together to come to Kelantan to pursue my higher studies and begin a very exciting adventure of a life time as a junior student in UMK with all the people and seniors that I am about to meet there. I am excited to experience what the Kelantan area and people have in store for me.…

As Bernard M. Baruch once said, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.” I was unaware that my opinion of myself was more meaningful than my peer’s opinion. I had a rough time figuring out who I was and who I wanted to be in my first few years of high school. The first chance I got to poke the popular bubble was taken, giving me one shot to embed myself into an exotic, unknown social group. What I didn’t know was that this social group made me feel like an outsider.…

Old Tom limped down the street in the warm rain. He was heading for the bar on the corner of Henderson Boulevard where he regularly went for an ice cold brew on hot summer afternoons. Come to think of it, he didn’t so much drink his beer, as sit in the corner nursing the same glass for hours at a time watching those perfectly round chilled droplets hit the mahogany countertop. A young sporting type, who looked remarkably similar to his youngest boy, approached him and offered him a drink but Tom just shook his fist and discretely muttered a few curses under his breath. He spoke to no-one, and after a while rose slowly from his chair and hobbled slowly towards the door.…

My stuffed crab was once fluffy and bright red. It’s now flattened and faded – something that 10+ years of being wedged between the dashboard and windshield of a car will do. It travels with me wherever my car goes and reminds me of one of the first walks on the beach I took with my husband 15 or so years ago when we were first dating. The crab itself isn’t anything spectacular as stuffed animals go, but the story behind him is a pretty good one.…

This happen to me a month ago when my boss called me for a meeting in his office, to talk just with my in private. The first thought in my mind was “I’m fired” but I did not know why or what was the reason for that decision. While my boss entered the office, my head was full of many thoughts about why me, and how will I get other job like this. In the meantime, my boss asked me about my family with a big smile; this is was so weird for me, assuming that the meeting was to fire me. I was very nervous because it was the first time that I had a meeting with him in private so I just gave him a short answer “They’re good in Venezuela” without any details. He started to ask me other questions like how do I feel in this company? And what did I think about some changes that he wanted to do in the company? At this time, instead of thinking about my firing, I started to think that this meeting was something good after all my nervousness.…

Waking up during winter break on a rather chilly morning, twenty degrees and it was precisely 9:00 a.m. and I was more than ready to drive to Quincy, Illinois, hop on an airplane, and head to my hometown Klamath Falls, Oregon. Travis was walking in the school building looking for his girl, Alicia. He went past the Math class, he saw Mr. Freeman and the principal making out he got disgusted and walked faster. While passing by the English class he decided to take a peek and see if she was in there. When he opened the door he saw nothing out of the ordinary but he started hearing people laughing. So he went in the class and started looking around. He saw the desk he used to sit on in his junior year. He went closer to take a look to make sure it was his, so he looked in the drawer where in his desk he made a secret pocket where he used to hide his cigarettes and lighter and other things that he could be expelled by having.
