Ang Pakikibaka Ng Mga Pilipino
Pinoy Times, Lunes, Marso 5, 2001, p. 4
Express your agreement or disagreement to the statement above. Give concrete examples. In what ways have colonial education developed this apathy or lack of interest? In what ways can the present system of education help solve this problem.
To a certain extent, I agree and disagree with the statement, I do not wish to appear NOT to have a stand on this so allow me to explain:
If I were to be realistic, I would have to admit that the statement is true. An example is an ordinary teacher working in a public school who handles three subjects and an advisory class with 30-50 students per class. She has a family of her own with 2-3 children and a husband who is a government employee. She rents a house with a fee of 5 thousand a month, exclusive of utilities. All children are in school. Monthly expenses on food, transportation, school fees etc. exceed her and her husband’s salaries combined. To augment their monthly earnings both husband and wife take on additional jobs, the teacher has private tutorials after school and the husband drives for a family on the weekends and holidays.
No one can question her integrity as a teacher; she does her work well and with sincerity. But with the bulk of her responsibilities not only with her own family but with her students, do you think she has the time to debate on issues such as corruption in government? An issue that she was born in and with already. An issue that she has no immediate solution for. An issue that continues even after the post has “changed hands”. That no matter who sits in government, same problem

This chapter presents a Philippine perspective on the concepts of peace, tolerance and harmony as core values of Philippine life and culture that have endured through- out the evolution and development of the nation from traditional to contemporary times. Although changes have occurred in their modes of manifestation, these core values remain as major themes in Philippine life and behaviour. The use of an influential person as a go-between for important matters such as asking for the hand of a daughter in marriage or negotiating for a peace settlement, instead of a face-to-face arrangement, and the use of euphemistic and indirect language in saying unpleasant things, so as not to incur hiya (a sense of shame) or to hurt the other person's amor propio (sense of personal worth or esteem) may have become mostly dysfunctional, but may still be effective at times.…

“Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!”, after watching Jose Rizal the Movie, these are the words that wanted to find its way out into my mouth. Words that wanted to travel beyond distance and beyond boundaries that would defy ages to finally find a resonating voice that sent earthquake to the stoned floor of the holy temple of God that sheltered fiends who clothed themselves in white and who spoke His words with fluency but undoubtedly knew nothing of His language. I could not say it better, as a realization hit me, but I admire my Motherland. I could not help but think how did she, after everything that was done to her, have found it in her heart to forgive?…

I’ve lived my entire life in the Philippines, not so much a feat I know, but more than that, I have dined with kings and queens on steaks and lobsters, and have eaten balut and fishballs with peasants and mobsters. So I can fairly say; I’ve seen a whole lot of the Filipino society. And if there’s one thing I have learned in all those years is that the worst critics of the Philippines and the Filipinos are not the racist Western Caucasians, nor are the high and mighty, (because of their oil) Middle-Easterners nor the blustering Americans, no! Their criticism is nothing compared to that of the Filipino’s scorn upon himself. How many of us have heard others, and even ourselves say these words and phrases, “ang mga Filipino kasi eh (insert negative characteristic/s here)” or “tayong mga Pinoy kasi...ganito, kwan... (insert negativity here) or SIMPLY say this in an EXASPERATED manner: “HAY PILIPINAS!”or “PINOY NGA NAMAN OH!”…

And so let me begin by asking the assumed question: Is there a Filipino Philosophy? And the proof for a positive answer to it can only be found in the actual articulation of it. Without this articulation, it will be difficult even to show that there is such a thing as a Filipino philosophy. Maybe in the first place we are talking about nothing. At this point, indeed, it would be better not to assume anything and so we need to ask: Is there a Filipino Philosophy?…
